After the past couple months of bullshit within the boxing fraternity and the weak ass shows that have been put forward, finally a boxing event that had fantastic amateur bouts and awesome pro bouts. The Fighting Fit Gym was packed to capacity last night for a Shamrock presentation of full-on Boxing and the crowd got more than their moneys worth…Well done.

NZ fight fans got to see Billy in action for the first time at The corporate Box on Saterday night. And there is a lot to see. The six foot five inch man mountain weighed in at a whopping 147kg and had his opponent down three times in the first 41 seconds, game over. Billy has had a lot of practice at this. He started his career in 1986 and since then he has only been beaten on four occassions. Three of the fighters that beat him were Tony Tucker, Francois Botha and Michael Moorer, no disgrace there. Billy wants nothing more than to be able to help his good mate Chauncy Welliver get to the top in the profession he loves. There is every possability Billy will fight in NZ again this year. If he does dont be late getting to your seat.

Chauncy Welliver once again put his belts and reputaion on the line when he took on Moyoyo Mensah at The Corporate Box in Auckland city on Saturday night. Without a doubt one of, if not the, busiest heavyweight fighter in the world Welliver tipped the scales at a tidy 108.9kg. This is a far cry from 130KG or so he used to fight at. The NZ cruiserweight champion Mensah weighed in at 101KG and looked very comfortable and in great shape for a fighter who had not fought for 18 months. Welliver said before the fight that he expected it would take time to wear Mensah down but I am sure he didnt expect the challenger to be in such great condition. From the first bell the pressure went on and both fighters tried to stamp some authority on the fight. It was Mensah however who controlled the ring for the most part in the early rounds with Welliver often fihgting with his back to the ropes where he would cover up and then launch attacks to the body. Referee Reg Williams was kept busy stopping the fighters pushing and warned Mensah that any more infringments would result in a point deduction. The warning went unheeded and in round eight Williams carried out his treat. Mensah was none too happy and it took some convincing from his corner (which now includes Ken Rainsfeild) that he should continue . Welliver had also been spoken to by Williams on a few occassions and both fighters seemed to get back to the job at hand in the ninth. At this stage of the fight it was still very much in the balance even with the point deduction. Mensah had not tired as some had predicted and Welliver had not been able to crack Mensah’s resolve. Both fighters come out for the tenth in good condition which was testament to their conditioning as the fight had been busy right through out. Maybe Mensah was more tired that he was showing because instead of punching like he had been doing he tied Welliver up and proceeded to push him across the ring. Referee Williams broke them and Mensah once again did the same thing forcing Welliver onto the ropes. When Williams asked Mensah to step back and he failed to do so Williams deducted another point. That was when Mensah turned and left the ring. Williams then declared the fight over and Welliver like he had been in his last sixteen appearances was pronounced the winner. In doing so he walked out of the ring with the NZ National Boxing Federation Heavyweight title, The Interim WBO Asia Pacific Heavyweight Title, The WBC Asian Boxing Council Heavyweight Title and The vacant WBO Oriental Heavyweight Title. Welliver who has fought every two months or so for the last two years said he dosent intend slowing down in 2012 and has his sights set on a David Tua clash if that can be arranged.
